Instructions for the
sending of specimens
|
Cadavers should be sent immediately
post mortem per train or mail or brought personally. Including a
comprehensive history facilitates the evaluation of pathological
results. If necessary, details can be discussed per telephone prior
to the tests. The examination of ruminants is not possible due to
the threat of epidemic diseases unless referred by a veterinarian
or the Clinics for Ruminants or Swine.
Cadavers and organs should not be
frozen as freezing artefacts can greatly reduce overall assessability.
Organ samples should be fixed in
10% formalin directly following their collection and sent in a tightly
closed container with a wide opening. A ratio of sample to formalin
volume of at least 1:10 is recommended. Organs sent without fixing
should be sent with cool packs if possible.
Should a bacteriological or virological
test be necessary, unfixed sample material should be included
with the fixed sample.
The examination of ruminants is only
possible upon referral by a veterinarian or the Clinics for Ruminants
or Swine due to the threat of epidemic diseases.
