In our group the major topic is the isolation of bacteria from various environmental sources and their taxonomic characterization. For classification and identification we are using a set of methods including analyses of 16S rRNA gene sequences, quinone systems, polar lipids, cell wall diamino acids, and polyamine patterns as well as genomic fingerprint techniques (ERIC-, BOX-, REP-, RAPD- PCR and ARDRA) and examination of physiological characteristics. In recent years we have contributed to the description of new taxa of four major lines of descent of the domain Bacteria namely Proteobacteria (Thermomonas, Vibrio, Psychrobacter, Pigmentiphaga, Xenophilus, Sphingomonas, Sphingopyxis, Novosphingobium, Erythrobacter, Ochrobactrum) Actinobacteria (Citricoccus, Agrococcus, Microbacterium, Georgenia, Frigoribacterium, Nocardiopsis) Gram-positives with low G+C content (Bacillus, Virgibacillus), CFB-group (Hymenobacter, Chryseobacterium) and the archaeal taxon Halococcus dombrowskii.

At present we are dealing with the characterization of bacteria which were isolated from livers of laboratory mice and which were obtained during studies on the hygiene status of the Medical Clinic for Ungulates and Small Animals at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.

Further interests are:

Colonization of the stomachs of dogs by Helicobacter and characterization of Helicobacter diversity.

Establishment of polar lipid profiles for classification of Mycoplasma species and related taxa.

Services

Examination of the hygiene status (airborne micro-organisms, surfaces),

PCR-diagnostics of Helicobacter from all sources (other taxa, please request),

Classification and identification of bacteria. from clinical and non-clinical origin.

Neighbour-joining tree showing the distribution of selected specied for which we contributed to their original description. The tree was calculated using the Phylogeny Inference Package (PHYLIP, Felsenstein, 1993; Dep. Genetics, Univ. of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA)
